§ 118-33. Direction of traffic.

  • (a)

    Officers of the police department, or such officers as are assigned by the director of public safety, including school crossing guards, are hereby authorized to direct all traffic by voice, hand or signal in conformity with traffic laws; provided, that in the event of a fire or other emergency or to expedite traffic or to safeguard pedestrians, officers of the police department may direct traffic as conditions may require, notwithstanding the provisions of the traffic laws.

    (b)

    Such jobs or employment to carry out the direction of traffic and to expedite traffic in the unincorporated areas of the county shall be performed by qualified police officers of the county police department or qualified officers of the county sheriff's department, subject to and as provided for in the respective departments' established regulations. No such job shall be performed except at locations and during hours approved by the respective department according to its regulations and approved by the county department of transportation, except in the case of an emergency as determined by the county police department or the county sheriff's office.

    (c)

    No other police or other agencies from within or outside the county shall be allowed to perform traffic direction jobs in the unincorporated areas of the county, except with the consent and approval of the director of public safety of the county or the sheriff of the county.

    (d)

    "Traffic direction" as used in this section means the controlling or restricting of movement of any motor vehicle that is traveling on any county-maintained road or state or federal highway within the county.
